Morel Season Always Passes Too Soon

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

The solid warming trend in late February this year was the beginning of an early showing of the highly sought Morel mushroom. I have learned to use maps and scout areas well before the season starts. This year I ventured 100 miles south of my southernmost spots to try to find the early birds. It paid off! March was phenomenal, even with the bitter weeklong cold snap. Closer to home the cold took its toll. The yields were small

er, and everything popped up at once, making it impossible to keep track of each area. All told, it was a great year. I learn so much more detail each year, but no matter how much I think I may know, the Morels still leave me guessing often. Here is a shot of a couple from April 24th. Happy hunting!
